How to Reach Matera

Bari Karol Wojtyła Airport (BRI)

The nearest airport to Matera is Bari Karol Wojtyła Airport (BRI), located approximately 55–65 km away. From the airport, participants can reach Matera by:

  • Shuttle bus: A direct shuttle service (operated by COTRAB and COTRAP) connects Bari Airport to Matera, with a stop in Viale A. Moro (between the FAL station and the Municipality building). Tickets can be purchased online or on board (subject to availability).

  • Private transfer: The Conference has a special arrangement with Discovery Matera for private transfers between Bari Airport and Matera. To book, simply email info@discoverymatera.it indicating that you are a GUEST IMS CONFERENCE.
  • Train: Alternatively, travelers can take a local bus or train from the airport to Bari Centrale station, and then continue to Matera via the Ferrovie Appulo Lucane (FAL) line (journey time approx. 90–100 minutes).

Naples International Airport (NAP)

Naples International Airport (NAP) is a further alternative, particularly for international travelers, though it is located about 250–300 km from Matera. As Matera has no direct national railway connection, reaching the city from Naples always requires combining train + bus, or taking a direct bus with one of the companies below:

  • By train + bus: Trenitalia connects Naples Centrale to Salerno, where a Freccialink coach continues to Matera on a single ticket; alternatively, travelers can reach Bari by train and continue on the FAL line.

Where to Stay

Matera offers a wide range of accommodation options in the historic centre and in the Sassi. However, the conference period is among the busiest of the year: availability fills up quickly and prices tend to be high. Some options may be located slightly outside the historic centre and require short transfers.

⚠️ We strongly recommend booking as early as possible. Availability is very limited during the conference days, and some partner accommodations may be located some distance from the conference venues, making the use of taxis or a shuttle service necessary.
